Leppävaara in short
Leppävaara is the largest and most active of Espoo’s centres with great connections all around the metropolitan area. Because of the good public transportation connections, only half of the households in Leppävaara own a car. Services, shops, workplaces, exercise and recreational possibilities are within walking distance and outdoors activities nearby.
At the moment 65,000 people live in Leppävaara area and the number is estimated to grow to 100,000 by 2050. Leppävaara has a youthful look and has been built during several decades. Most of its area has already been planned but complementary construction will continue in the upcoming years.
Leppävaara is also a cultural and entertainment centre. Sello library with its concert halls, the Gallen-Kallela museum, movie theatres, several restaurants, GLO Hotel and recreational activies such as a bowling alley are available in Leppävaara. Shopping centre Sello is one of the biggest and most ecological shopping centres in the Nordics.
Leppävaara Sports Park is the biggest of Espoo’s seven sports parks and offers a wide range of different sports activities. There’s an athletics stadium, a bandy rink and an ice stadium. Kilo riding-hall and a golf range, Vermo harness racing centre and frisbee golf track and the Angry Birds Park are also located in Leppävaara.
According to a study conducted in 2015, Leppävaara is the favourite location for companies within Espoo. Approximately 10,000 people are currently employed in the area. The most notable business areas in Leppävaara are information business, retail and wholesale, and education.
Leppävaara is an active education centre that provides opportunities to study for all ages. In addition to the extensive network of comprehensive schools and the general upper secondary school with a sports emphasis, Leppävaara has Metropolia’s technical degree programmes to offer, as well as the education provided by Laurea University of Applied Sciences and the Adult Education Centre.

In the next 10 years, Leppävaara will grow through residential and commercial construction. Housing for an additional 10,000 people will be finished by 2025. By that time the first transversal track of the greater Helsinki area will be in use and will connect Leppävaara to the Otaniemi campus and metro station.
The currently wide range of services will be further increased as the new Hatsinanpuisto business and sports centre will be in use.
New apartments, office spaces, a hotel and commercial premises will be built in northern Leppävaara. At the same time the commercial centre and walking area of Leppävaara will be extended to the north side of the train track.
The development work aims to strengthen the image of Leppävaara as an independent city centre and Leppävaara’s compact city structure will be an example of how inhabitants will be able to lead their daily lives without private vehicles.
Most important development projects
Development of north side of Leppävaara centre
The building project of the northern part of Leppävaara’s centre is the most important development project in the area. At the moment, the old Turku highway and the train track divide Leppävaara centre. Through the project the dividing effect will be diminished, northern and southern Leppävaara will be better connected and the transportation terminal can be lifted to a whole new level. The construction phase of approximately 60,000 square metres of floor area is estimated to take place between 2018 and 2023. The building will include new homes for 700 new inhabitants, office spaces, a hotel and commercial premises.
Hatsinanpuisto business and sports centre
Hatsinanpuisto business and sports centre will further increase Leppävaara’s current offering of commercial services. The construction of approximately 100,000 square meter of floor area will take place between 2017 and 2025.
Raide-Jokeri express tramline
Raide-Jokeri is an express tramline that will be constructed between Helsinki Itäkeskus and Espoo Keilaniemi. The track will be 25 kilometres long, 9 of which located in Espoo. The construction of the Raide-Jokeri rail line will begin as soon as possible. The project will have a significant effect on the development of Leppävaara’s infrastructure.
Vermonniitty building project
Residential construction of 225,000 square metres of floor area will provide a home to 5,000 new inhabitants. The construction is to take place between 2016 and 2025.
Mäkkylä and Puustellinkallio residential building
Residential buildings and homes for 1,200 new inhabitants will be built in the current vocational school area. The construction project of approximately 60,000 square metres of floor area will take place between 2017 and 2025.
Palokärki industrial area and Kilonkartano
Homes for 1,000 new inhabitants will be built in the Palokärki and Kilonkartano area. The construction is to include 50,000 square metres of floor area and to take place between 2017 and 2020.
